Once upon a time, there was a poor farm boy named Jack. He had no money, no job, and no plan—but he had hope, and sometimes, that’s the best place to start.
One morning, Jack woke up and said to himself, “There’s nothin’ here for me but dirt and chores. I’m gonna head out and seek my fortune!”
His mama packed him a biscuit and wished him well. Jack waved goodbye and walked down the dusty road with nothing but a smile and a pocket full of dreams.
As he walked, Jack met a cat sitting by the side of the road. The cat said, “Where you headed, boy?”
Jack replied, “I’m off to find my fortune!”
The cat purred, “Mind if I come along? I’m pretty clever, and I don’t eat much.”
“Sure,” Jack said, “Come on!”
Soon they met a dog, then a goose, and even a tired old donkey. Each asked to join Jack, and Jack said “Yes” every time. “We’ll find our fortune together,” he told them.
After walking for days, they came to a dark forest and saw a house lit up like a lantern in the night. But inside, they heard the clatter and clash of robbers counting stolen gold.
Jack and his animal friends came up with a plan. They climbed on each other’s backs: the donkey on the bottom, then the dog, the cat, and the goose on top. Then they all made a racket like you’ve never heard before—howling, hissing, honking, and braying!
The robbers thought it was a monster coming to eat them and ran screaming into the woods, leaving all their gold behind.
Jack and his new friends made themselves at home, ate like kings, and laughed till their bellies hurt.
Jack never had to walk another dusty mile. He found a home, good friends, and a pile of gold—all because he dared to start the journey.
The Moral of the Story
If you have courage to begin, kindness to welcome others, and wisdom to work together, you’ll find a fortune greater than gold.
